Casino streaming turned slot spins and crash rounds into live entertainment watched by millions. The biggest Canadian name in it is xQc. Here is how the scene developed, why it moved platforms, and what viewers should keep in mind.

18 OCT 2022Twitch's ban on unlicensed slots and dice streams took effect

How casino streaming took off

Slot streaming grew in the late 2010s, when streamers began showing bonus buys and big multipliers live. Crypto casinos were a natural partner: fast deposits, fast games, and high-volatility slots that produce dramatic moments. By 2022, gambling was one of the most-watched categories on Twitch.

The Twitch rule of October 2022

After public criticism of gambling streams, Twitch introduced a rule: from 18 October 2022, streams of slots, roulette and dice games from sites not licensed in the United States or in other jurisdictions with sufficient consumer protection were banned. Sports betting, fantasy sports and poker were not covered by the ban. Most crypto casino streams moved elsewhere.

Kick, and xQc's move

Kick, launched in 2022, allows casino streams and is widely reported to be backed by Stake's co-founders. It became the new home of slot streaming. Its biggest signing was xQc: in June 2023 the Quebec-born streamer signed a non-exclusive deal reported as worth up to US$100 million over two years, letting him stream on Kick alongside other platforms.

xQc's gambling streams had drawn criticism before the move, including from other streamers, and he has spoken about his own gambling losses on stream. That openness is part of why his streams are discussed so widely.

What Canadian viewers should keep in mind

  • Streams are edited by attention. Big wins get clipped and shared; long losing sessions do not.
  • Balances may not be personal. Many streamers play with sponsored balances or under affiliate deals. See are casino streams real money?.
  • The maths does not change on camera. A 96% slot returns 96% whether or not it is streamed. Our house edge article explains why.
  • Pick casinos on documents. A streamer's favourite casino is not necessarily the one with the clearest terms. Our payout board compares licences, ID rules and caps.

Watching casino streams from Canada

Most large casino streams run late in the evening, Eastern time, and replays stay on the platform. If you watch, watch for the numbers rather than the reactions: the stake per spin, the cost of each bonus buy and the balance before and after. Our article on casino streams and real money explains how streams are funded and why a balance on screen may not be the streamer's own.
