Bitcoin's price and your bankroll

A Bitcoin casino balance carries two risks at once: the games and the market. You can win at the tables and still lose money in dollars, or the other way round. Here is how to plan for both.

Session A is the one that surprises people: you won, and you still lost dollars.

A simple bankroll plan

  1. Set the monthly budget in dollars.
  2. Convert only that budget, ideally into a stablecoin.
  3. Split it into sessions, and each session into small stakes.
  4. Withdraw winnings above the session budget.
  5. Stop when a session budget is gone. Do not top up from savings.

A worked example

Say you deposit 0.002 BTC when one Bitcoin is worth C$100,000, so your balance is C$200. You play for an evening and end exactly even: still 0.002 BTC. If Bitcoin fell 5% during the session, your C$200 is now C$190. If it rose 5%, it is C$210. The game gave you nothing either way; the market gave or took C$10.

Now take a session where you win 20% in the game, to 0.0024 BTC, while Bitcoin falls 10%. In dollars you end at C$216, up C$16 instead of C$40. Over a single evening, Bitcoin's daily moves are often as large as a typical session result.

Converting at the right moment

If you deposit in Bitcoin but want a dollar result, some casinos let you swap your balance to USDT inside the wallet. Others require a withdrawal and a new deposit. Either way, the conversion has a cost: a spread at the casino or fees at the exchange. Decide which currency you play in before the first bet, rather than switching back and forth during a session.

If you prefer to hold BTC

Some players hold Bitcoin anyway and play with part of it. That is a choice to keep market exposure. In that case, track your bankroll in both BTC and dollars, and do not increase stakes because the price fell. Our stablecoins article covers the alternative, and responsible gambling has more tools for keeping limits.

Three bankroll rules for crypto players

  1. Set the budget in dollars, even if you deposit Bitcoin. Write down what the deposit was worth in Canadian dollars when you made it.
  2. Keep gambling coins apart from savings. A separate wallet, or a separate exchange account, keeps a long-term Bitcoin holding out of reach during a session.
  3. Withdraw wins in the currency you count in. If you think in dollars, convert to USDT before you withdraw, or sell on the exchange the same day the coins arrive.

Questions and answers

How does Bitcoin's price affect my casino balance?

If your balance is in BTC, its dollar value rises and falls with the market, independently of your bets.

Can I lose money even if I win at the casino?

Yes. If BTC falls more than your winnings during the session, you end with fewer dollars than you started with.

Can the market help me?

Yes, if BTC rises while you hold it. But that is market speculation, not gambling skill.

How do I avoid market risk?

Hold your casino balance in a stablecoin such as USDT, and convert only what you plan to play.

What is a bankroll?

The money you set aside for gambling, separate from everything else.

How big should one bet be?

Small relative to the session budget, so you can play many rounds. Many players use 1% to 2% of the session budget per bet.

Should I set my budget in BTC or dollars?

In dollars. It is how you pay your bills, and it does not move with the market.

What if BTC drops while I am playing?

Do not raise your stakes to make it back. Stick to your dollar budget.

Should I keep winnings in the casino?

No. Withdraw what you are not playing with.

Is it better to deposit BTC or USDT?

For budgeting, USDT. For players who already hold BTC and accept the swings, BTC is fine.
